A hectic end to the summer transfer window saw a host of Premier League clubs splash the cash, as the Euro 2024 lull in business finally gave way to a month of wheeling and dealing in August. With the dust now settled, it’s time to consider which clubs made the best - and the worst - decisions on incomings and outgoings during the summer months:
Manchester City - Winner
Man City have started the season on fire, and they were just as impressive in the transfer window, making some smart moves that have strengthened the team and helped Pep Guardiola's side look healthier and stronger.

Hide AdTheir £34 million signing Savinho is a direct replacement for Riyad Mahrez, with a playing style very similar to the Algerian's. His addition means City can unlock teams that sit deep, and his dribbling ability is already seen as a major asset to the team. Then there's Ilkay Gündogan, one of the best at making runs from deep. They acquired him for almost nothing—an incredible signing that will help Guardiola rotate the squad and give Rodri the rest he needs.
This summer was effective for City, and they look poised to win the league for the fifth time in a row, with a fresh Erling Haaland looking ruthless, having notched up two hat-tricks already.
Arsenal - Winner
Arsenal needed defensive cover and spent €45 million to land Riccardo Calafiori, while manager Mikel Arteta also bolstered his midfield by signing Spain's Euro 2024 star Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for a reasonable €33 million. The signing of Raheem Sterling on loan is another massive boost for the team, as he brings experience and a winning mentality. Sterling could be the difference between finishing second and first. However, they did not sign an out-and-out striker.
Liverpool - Loser
This was a frustrating window for Liverpool fans. They made only two signings—Giorgi Mamardashvili for €40 million, before sending him back to Valencia on loan; and an intriguing punt on the brilliant-but-often-injured winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus for a mere €13 million.

It’s been another eventful summer for Chelsea. Twelve players came in, including Jadon Sancho, who arrived on transfer deadline day, but almost 21 players left, including loan spells that saw Trevoh Chalobah join Crystal Palace and Conor Gallagher move to Atletico Madrid permanently. Sterling was forced out to Arsenal, and Ben Chilwell resisted the temptation to move to Brentford, deciding to stay on. What might hurt Chelsea, though, is the fact that they did not secure Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, despite publicly pursuing him on transfer deadline day.
Newcastle United - Loser
The Magpies have had a window to forget. They pushed for Marc Guehi until the last day of the transfer window, and the disappointment reportedly left manager Eddie Howe fuming. The silver lining is that they were able to retain key players like Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimarães.
Aston Villa - Winner
Amadou Onana is a brilliant signing, and he's already proving to be a popular figure with the fan base. Ross Barkley will add experience, and Ian Maatsen, with his best years ahead of him, is a promising addition. It's been a summer of strengthening with players who can solve complex situations.
Crystal Palace - Loser
Crystal Palace lost some important players like Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen, but they brought in Eddie Nketiah, who can score goals, and Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea. Their biggest transfer win is holding onto Guehi and Eberechi Eze—two crucial players.

Tottenham have invested in both the future and the present, with their biggest signing being Dominic Solanke. There's also promise in the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall. Ange Postecoglou managed to offload players like Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso, so it will be interesti ng to see if they can challenge for the title this season.
