Aston Villa enjoyed a rather hectic summer transfer window as they prepared for their Champions League adventure.
Around £130m was spent on some eye-catching signings such as Everton’s midfield powerhouse Amadou Onana, Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen and Luton Town midfielder Ross Barkley. However, there were also several departures from Villa Park as Emery recouped around £100m from the sales of Moussa Diaby to Al-Ittihad and Douglas Luz to Juventus. Cameron Archer, Tim Iroegbunam, Morgan Sanson and Calum Chambers also left on permanent deals and the likes of Alex Moreno, Samuel Illang-Junior, Enzo Barrenechea and Leander Dendocker have all made loan moves elsewhere.

Villa were surprisingly active during the January transfer window with four new faces added to Unai Emery’s squad as the Spanish boss looked to build on what had been a promising opening half to the season. Within days of the window opening, Emery had completed the £28m signing of Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio as he saw off interest from three other Premier League clubs to secure the addition of the Portugal international.
Further competition was added at the end of the pitch as Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi was signed in a £25m deal and another arrival from north of the border came in the form of Motherwell’s promising midfielder Lennon Miller, who cost a more modest £4m. The final deal was not completed until the final hours of the window when Emery agreed to take Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell on loan for the rest of the season and a £19m permanent deal will follow during the summer.
OUTS

There were a number of departures from Villa Park in the final week of the January transfer window after Villa focused on incomings for the vast majority of the month. However, the three exits were all in defensive areas and the first saw Kortney Hause move to Championship club West Bromwich Albion on loan until the end of the season. That will almost certainly bring an end to his time at Villa as the defender’s contract comes to a close next summer. After summer transfer talk saw him linked with a move to Fulham, Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos made a £9m switch to French club Lyon and Lucas Digne also headed to Ligue 1 with a £10m move to Monaco.
