The latest Aston Villa injury news and return dates, including updates on Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana.

Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening marked their first Champions League victory for over 40 years – but some of the shine was taken off a memorable evening thanks to potential injuries to Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana.

The two midfielders are among six players who are out or doubts for the Premier League meeting with Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon, with Unai Emery’s options increasingly limited for their last match before the October international break. We’ve pulled together all the latest injury news and updates on Aston Villa’s stricken players below, including their expected return dates when available.

Jacob Ramsey

The home-grown academy product was one of two players unable to complete Wednesday night’s match – the 23-year-old limped off the pitch with an apparent groin injury just before the half-hour mark and was replaced by Leon Bailey.

Unai Emery did not provide an update on the severity of the injury after the match and the club have yet to issue a statement regarding his likely availability for the game against Manchester United. Ramsey missed 36 matches last season due to a variety of injury problems, mostly related to foot and toe issues, and Villa will be hoping that any absence is a brief one.

Amadou Onana

The summer signing also failed to last the course against Bayern Munich, and was substituted for Ross Barkley after an hour of play following what looked like a hamstring injury.

The Belgian was in clear discomfort as he came off the field, but as with Ramsey, neither manager nor club have made any public announcements regarding his condition and future availability. Tests are expected to be conducted on both players on Thursday with further information expected to be available by the time Emery next speaks to the media on Friday.

Matty Cash

The wing-back has been out of action since the second match of the season, when he suffered his own hamstring injury during the defeat to Arsenal. He hasn’t featured since but Emery has told the media that he is back in full training – the Poland international was only ruled out of the midweek match against Bayern Munich late on as he hasn’t quite reached match fitness yet.

He is in contention to face Manchester United however, although it isn’t yet clear whether he will be able to play a full 90 minutes. Youngster Lamare Bogarde may continue to deputise if Cash is unable to start. He should be at full fitness after the international break and is not expected to be handed a recall to his national side.

John McGinn

The Scotland international midfielder missed the 2-2 draw at Portman Road last weekend and was once again absent against Bayern Munich due to a hamstring injury which will also keep him out of action over the international break.

McGinn has since spoken about his concerns about the impact of the ever-expanding fixture list, saying that it “does really start to take a toll” on players’ physical and mental health. He is expected to be back in contention after the international break, and will hope to be at full fitness when Aston Villa travel to London to face Fulham on 19 October.

Tyrone Mings & Boubacar Kamara

Two players in a very similar boat – both defender Mings and midfielder Kamara suffered anterior cruciate ligament injuries last season and haven’t been able to play since, but there have been positive updates from the club with both players finally returning to first-team training last week.

Neither will feature against Manchester United despite Emery saying that the pair have been “training very well” – instead, they are expected to be handed some minutes in the Aston Villa Under-21s match against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon, with Emery suggesting that they could both get 45 minutes under their belt. Assuming all goes to plan, both players could be in contention for the match day squad against Fulham after the international break.
