Chelsea's £89m transfer gamble could be a disaster for the ages - but now is not the time to cut their losses

This is the season where we find out what Mykhailo Mudryk is made of - but there are signs he can survive.

Mykhailo Mudryk had a rare start against League Two side Barrow as Chelsea cruised to an impressive 5-0 win to progress to the fourth round of the League Cup. Undoubtedly, one of the players with a point to prove was the Ukrainian.

The £89m signing, who Chelsea beat Arsenal to back in January 2023, has been on the outside looking in for a while, especially since the sudden arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Joao Felix, and Pedro Neto in the most recent summer transfer window. Even his manager has been forced to address Mudryk's lack of game time and recent struggles.

He told LondonWorld: “I don’t think it’s a lack of confidence. Misha is Misha. You have to accept the way he is. Hopefully, he can get minutes and do better.”

3 Added Minutes have reliably reported that the club turned down an offer from a German side this summer, believing Mudryk has everything it takes to fulfil his potential. Chelsea have tried different methods to help him improve, and those who watch him in training say he does things that even surprise his manager. That’s why the club is not willing to give up on him.

The belief is that for a true champion, heightened competition tends to bring out the best. This is what the club hopes to see from the Ukrainian. Mudryk knows his position is under threat, and he needs to raise his game, or the inevitable will happen. Against Barrow, he showed a level of commitment and focus that will surely please his manager.

Mudryk has been under scrutiny due to the high expectations and transfer fee associated with him. This could serve as motivation for him to prove his doubters wrong and work even harder to succeed in the Premier League. His hunger and determination are likely to fuel his development.

Despite the challenges, Chelsea have invested heavily in young talents like Mudryk, and they are likely to give him time to develop. The club’s recent strategy of focusing on youth means Mudryk is seen as a long-term player, which should afford him the patience and support to reach his potential.

At this level, results are critical, and the pressure from wages and expectations means everyone is looking over their shoulders. However, there is a player in Mudryk, and Chelsea have already prepared their squad for the season. This should be the year we see growth and commitment from him, especially with everyone around him trying to make their mark. Sancho has come in and made an impact, Felix is scoring goals, and Neto's presence has increased competition. But Mudryk has the talent to succeed here.

For a club aiming to win trophies - competing in the Europa Conference League, League Cup, FA Cup, and Premier League - a big squad is necessary. While doubts exist, and some may have already given up, there is still a player in Mudryk. He deserves at least one more chance to fight for his future at Chelsea.
