The £100m brutal striker Chelsea must turn to after pulling out of Samu Omorodion deal

Chelsea’s sporting directors have been working around the clock to find solutions in the last 24 hours.

Chelsea are suddenly having cold feet over signing Samu Omorodion, with reports suggesting that the striker has been instructed to return to Madrid. Sources in England claim the deal is dead and unlikely to be resurrected.

This has been an incredibly busy summer for Chelsea, who have brought in as many as 11 players so far, with still three weeks to go in the transfer window. As of the time of writing, Chelsea have instructed Conor Gallagher to return to the club, and there are reports that Atletico Madrid are looking to offer Joao Felix, the Portuguese superstar who spent the second half of the 2022/2023 season at Stamford Bridge to ensure the deal for Gallagher doesn’t also collapse.

The financial situation of the club means they’re trying to sell Gallagher to balance the books before bringing in more players. If the Blues can get that deal over the line, then a move for Napoli star Victor Osimhen is surely the logical next step.

Ultimately, financial considerations will dictate who the Blues board gets in, but this Chelsea team is crying out for a striker who not only fits the manager’s style but also delivers in tough situations.

Osimhen and Napoli seem headed for a split, and even though the reported fee is around £100 million, his age and attributes make him the ideal striker to ensure Chelsea is ready to compete for titles. Every top Chelsea team in the past has had a striker who can score 20 or more goals in a season and win tight games—think Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Didier Drogba, and Diego Costa.

That is the hallmark of Chelsea: a feared team led by a goal-scoring monster leading the line. This is the DNA on which the success of the last 20 years was built. Even though this is a new project, the foundations are still the same, and the goals are, too - Chelsea need to start winning even more now that they have invested heavily.

At the age of 25, Osimhen is still within the peak range of his career, with plenty of football ahead of him and hopefully a lot of goals too. At his best and injury-free, there’s no doubt he’s one of the best strikers in Europe, giving Chelsea a weapon to hurt teams as they look to return to their absolute best and being the team that wins massive trophies.

Against Inter Milan over the weekend at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fans saw how a dominant centre-forward like Marcus Thuram can control the game, even earning the admiration of the home fans.

There’s something special about a striker who can hold his own against big, tall defenders, bring others into play, and score goals himself. The Clearlake ownership has gone all out in their investment, and there's no doubting their ambitions. Now they need to top it off with a world-class, proven scorer to close the squad. They cannot afford to get it wrong, with the threat of an annual struggle to make the top four a distinct possibility should they fail to get the right striker in.
