The £20m questionable Chelsea transfer deal that could spark dressing room chaos

Chelsea have now agreed a deal in principle to sign Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, 3addedminutes can confirm, as he’s currently on a flight to the U.S. where he will undergo his medical before signing his new contract and linking up with his teammates.

The 22-year-old, who burst onto the scene at Villarreal last season, is expected to cost the Blues £20 million and will put pen to paper on a seven-year deal, similar to the one that fellow stopper Robert Sanchez is on.

Reports say that new manager Enzo Maresca insisted on the signing as he looks to upgrade that department and take Chelsea back to fighting for top football. Jorgensen will compete to be the club's number one, but his move puts Djordje Petrovic's future in doubt after the Serbian stopper filled in for the injured Robert Sanchez last season as first choice.

However, there are some concerns about this signing:

He’s not done it at the highest level

The Danish star comes into a challenging environment where he is expected to hit the ground running. For someone who cost £20 million, he won’t be given much time to adapt to a new country and a new league. Djordje Petrovic impressed greatly at Chelsea last season, but his perceived shortcomings in the use of his feet have made him the sacrificial lamb. Giving Jorgensen a seven-year deal also means it will be hard to offload him if things don’t work out, and there are already many players on the wage bill that Chelsea are struggling to move on.

Another signing that looks at the future and the present 

While building for the future is essential, Chelsea's immediate needs should not be overlooked. The team requires reinforcements in key areas to address current deficiencies and compete effectively in the short term. Jorgensen, with his potential future promise, doesn’t improve the squad immediately. While he provides competition, this should be measured and not send the wrong signal to players in the squad.
