The Us have been in pursuit of the 28-year-old for a while now, looking to bring in the former Peterborough United and Sheffield Wednesday man following a really strong end to the season with Fleetwood Town last time out.

Marriott got eight goals in 19 games for the Cod Army following his transfer from the Posh in January, and that form saw him attract interest from a number of clubs – Oxford being the keenest.

Liam Manning’s ambitious Oxford are currently fourth in the division after picking up three wins from four this season, and recently added Ipswich Town’s Greg Leigh to their list of new arrivals as they go in pursuit of promotion out of the division.

It’s understood that they have now made a bid of upwards of £500,000 as they seek to try and get a deal done for Marriott to come in and lead their line, and if all goes well that move could be finalised within the coming days.

Manning’s side face Charlton Athletic this weekend as they seek to add another win to their tally for the 2023/24 campaign, and though it’s unlikely that Marriott is through the door in time for that fixture there is hope that he could finalise a move before the transfer window closes at they take on Port Vale on September 2nd.

Fleetwood reportedly spent £250,000 on Marriott when they signed him from Peterborough, so would be set for a tidy profit if the deal does get done.
