From relegation to Europe: How Nuno Espirito is plotting one of the greatest stories with Nottingham Forest
and on Freeview 262 or Freely 565
Nottingham Forest are one of only six English clubs to have won the biggest trophy in European football. They claimed two European Cups, now known as the UEFA Champions League, in 1978/79 and 1979/80. The Tricky Trees also boast the European Super Cup in their trophy room, a testament to their status as one of Europe’s super clubs in years past. Unfortunately, since the 1995/96 season, when they lost their UEFA Cup quarterfinal tie to eventual winners Bayern Munich, they have yet to return to European competition.
However, things seem to be changing for the better this season. Forest currently sit seventh in the Premier League with 16 points, just 2 points shy of a UEFA Champions League spot. While competing in the Champions League might still seem like a dream, they can aim high, and if they fall short, they’ll still land among the stars, that is, in the Europa Conference League.

Hide AdHead coach Nuno Espírito Santo has built a team that’s difficult to beat. The Portuguese tactician, known for his ability to challenge top teams during his time at Wolves, seems to have rediscovered his mojo. This season, he’s claimed three points away at Anfield against title-chasing Liverpool, taken a point from a rejuvenated Chelsea side, and earned a comeback draw against Brighton at the Amex after trailing by two goals. These are the hallmarks of a mid-table team capable of having a breakthrough season.
One defining trait of this side is their resilience. They have the second-best defence in the league, with only seven goals conceded, just 2 more than Liverpool’s league-leading five goals allowed in nine games. With such a solid defence, they can grind out results on the road and rely on their passionate home crowd to secure valuable wins at City Ground, all in pursuit of European football.
Offensively, 11 goals from nine games is a reasonable return given their pragmatic approach. Chris Wood’s form has been particularly encouraging, he provides the option to defend deep and capitalise on any chance to score. The New Zealand striker has netted seven goals in nine matches this season. Last year, he managed 14 goals in a campaign where the club battled relegation, a strong contribution.
The fans at City Ground can look to Aston Villa’s recent European resurgence as inspiration. Just like Forest, the Villans were once a dominant European force that lost their way in the modern era. Through strategic decisions, including hiring the right manager, they’ve made their way back to the elite level, starting with qualification for the Conference League. This story could certainly inspire Forest as they set their own European sights.
