Liverpool have the opportunity to delve into the transfer market when the window opens

Liverpool haven’t quite finished with their Premier League title victory partying yet this season, with the all-important trophy lift still to come later this month. Once those celebrations have died down, all attentions will then be turned to retaining the title next season.

That said, it would be fair to presume that Manchester City and Arsenal may have something to say about that ambition, and will look to grow stronger over the summer months to prevent the Reds becoming back-to-back champions of England. Liverpool must ensure that they are ready for if their rivals mount a push for top spot ahead of them.

Arne Slot’s side have already made strides to get ahead for next season, managing to tie down Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to new deals. They have both put pen-to-paper on fresh two-year contracts running until 2027, meaning their futures have now been resolved. Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t followed suit though and he will head out the exit door as a free agent - a decision which has cut close to the bone of the Anfield faithful.

Slot himself has achieved far more than was expected of him in his first season, which was expected by most to be a tricky transition period following the exit of club legend Jurgen Klopp. The new coach’s excellence is set to be richly rewarded by the board this summer, who look set to back him well in the transfer window.

Liverpool eye Julian Alvarez transfer deal as ex-Manchester City ace emerges on radar

It could be argued that Alexander-Arnold’s aforementioned exit isn’t the worst thing in the world for Liverpool, from a financial point of view. There is no doubt they will miss his ability as a player and a creator, but his departure will free up squad space and precious funds. Getting him off the wage bill will mean there is more cash to spend on signings.

With that in mind, the Reds are keen on Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, according to Caught Offside. They could try and lure the former Manchester City star back to England to boost their attacking department. He was on the books at the Etihad Stadium from 2022 to 2024, before his £81 million transfer to Spain.

Alvarez, 25, could be seen by Slot as someone to add more firepower to his forward ranks. He would be an exciting acquisition for the Merseyside outfit and getting him would be a statement of intent. In addition, he could offer them something different to what they already have at their disposal.

The Argentina international, who has earned 44 caps for his country, won the World Cup back in 2022 after his nation beat France in the final in Qatar. He has also won the Champions League with City in the past, as well as the Premier League, FA Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup under Pep Guardiola’s guidance. Since joining Atletico Madrid, he has scored a healthy 27 goals in 51 matches, 15 of which have come in the league.

Alvarez is a serial winner and would be perfect for Liverpool. It would also get one over on City, whose supporters would presumably be far from pleased to see him join one of their rivals. However, they made their decision to sell him and it isn’t the Reds’ fault if it comes back to bite them in the future.

Liverpool swap deal involving Darwin Nunez on the cards

Few would argue with the suggesting that Darwin Nunez could do with a change of scene away from Liverpool. His time with his current club has been one of frustration, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave for something new in the near future. He’d be the perfect bait to secure the signing of Alvarez, offering an alluring incentive to the Spanish side that could give the Reds a distinct advantage over other sides vying for his services.

That may tempt Los Colchoneros into selling as they would be getting someone in return. Nunez is an individual who Simeone may fancy working with too. He is still raw but with his solid attributes of pace and power, he could be someone who the Argentine can mould and try and improve.

Liverpool brought in Nunez, 25, back in 2022. He has since found the net on 40 occasions in 140 outings but has struggled for form this term. In fact, he has only managed to score seven times which isn’t the best return, considering the amount of chances the quality players around him like Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai can create.

His defining moment in a red shirt may well be the gasps of anguish that echoed around Anfield, as his lacklustre penalty shoot-out miss condemned the side to a premature exit at the hands of finalists Paris Saint-Germain in their Round of 16 clash back in March.

Atletico Madrid could be ideal for the Uruguay international as his next destination. They regularly challenge for trophies in Spain and they would provide him with more game time. He needs a platform to show what he can do and prove a point and Simeone should give him that.

He may not be the only player to possibly leave the Reds over the coming months. They have a few assets they may look to cash in on to freshen things up. These include Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott and Caoimhín Kelleher. Nunez seems as likely as any player to leave Anfield this summer - the Reds must now do their sensible thing in cutting their losses on the forward, and do all in their power to use him as a means to sign a superior upgrade in Alvarez.
