The 3AddedMinutes take on the latest transfer speculation linking Liverpool with a move for a France international.

Marcus Thuram appears to have dropped a major hint over where he sees his future lying amid reports Liverpool are keen to reignite their interest in the Inter Milan forward.

The 29-times capped France international was reportedly a target for the Reds during Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield reign after he impressed during his time with Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach. Thuram, son of former World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, scored 44 goals and provided 29 assists in 134 appearances during a four-year stay with with Die Fohlen and attracted the attention of a whole host of European football’s biggest clubs as he approached the final months of his contract during the second half of the 2022/23 season.

Thuram’s involvement in the unique mid-season World Cup Finals was played out to background noise surrounding a possible future move as the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United were all named as possible suitors for the versatile forward. Indeed, Magpies manager Eddie Howe was forced to address comments from then-Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin suggesting he had spoken to Thuram about a possible move to St James Park. Speaking at the time, Howe said: “Well done Maxi! He’s (Thuram) a top player. But yeah, no more than that. He’s one that I watched in the World Cup for sure but no more than that.”

However, it was Serie A, rather than the Premier League, that would provide the next step in the forward’s career as Inter fought off interest from a whole host of other suitors to land Thuram on a free transfer during the summer of 2023. A first season at the San Siro brought a promising return of 15 goals and 14 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions as Thuram became a Serie A champion and the 27-year-old has continued that momentum into the current campaign with eight goals and five assists in just 15 games during the first three months of the season.

His form has led to suggestions Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is keen to add Thuram to his squad with Gazzetta Dello Sport claiming the Reds could look to trigger a reported £70m release clause in his current contract. That would mean the former Guingamp and Sochaux star going into competition with the likes of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez for a place in Slot’s starting lineup as he looks to guide the Anfield club to success in a number of competitions this season. However, Thuram seems to have dropped a major hint over his future during the international break and delivered a blow to Liverpool’s hopes in the process.

Speaking after helping France to a 3-1 win against Italy in the San Siro, he said: “I love this stadium, I love (the) San Siro. The game against Italy was strange for me. I played against my brothers, which was very strange, but I love all of them, and I was happy to cross paths with them.”

The 3AM Verdict: “There is absolutely no doubt Thuram would be a significant addition to the Liverpool squad - despite the outlay required to sign the France forward looking to be sizeable. However, the Inter star’s latest comments seem to indicate he is perfectly happy with life at the San Siro - and who can blame him as he continues to go from strength to strength with one of Serie A’s powerhouses.”
