Liverpool are in for some significant changes once the transfer window opens this summer. With players like Darwin Nunez expected to leave and the Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid saga looking increasingly likely, the soon-to-be Premier League champions will have some gaps to fill.

So far, Liverpool have announced new contracts for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. They are now shifting their attention to new signings and Anfield isn’t short of its exciting rumours. Not only will the Reds need to maintain this season’s momentum but also look at how they can improve and challenge for more trophies next season.

With that in mind, we’ve taken a closer look at some leading transfer targets who could help take Liverpool to the next level in the 2025/26 season and beyond.

Who should Liverpool sign this summer to boost trophy chances next season?

Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa

With the ever-divisive Nunez expected to be sold this summer, Liverpool are on the market for a new centre-forward. Since the arrival of Mohamed Salah, the bulk of Liverpool’s goals have come from the wings, so the Reds haven’t really had to worry about lack of numbers from the No.9 position.

However, Salah is now in the latter stages of his career and will leave Liverpool at some point. The club need to be well-equipped for his eventual departure but planning for the present days is also crucial.

There have been occasions this season where Liverpool have looked less lively than usual in front of goal. Missed chances have also been frustrating for the Reds so they really do need a reliable centre-forward who can hoover up opportunities in front of goal that Salah either creates or doesn’t put away.

Alexander Isak was the leading man on Liverpool’s radar but Newcastle United are determined to price out any rivals from signing him this summer. The Reds’ attention is now starting to turn to Ollie Watkins, with Football Insider reporting that they are monitoring his situation at Aston Villa closely.

Villa are exploring the potential option of signing loanee Marcus Rashford for free and selling Watkins for a fee in the region of £50-60 million. Not having to spend as much cash will be one appealing factor for the Reds but Watkins’ goal output speaks for itself.

Despite being in and out of favour this season, the 29-year-old has contributed 16 goals and 13 assists to Villa’s tally. His goal count for the season so far is the same as Diogo Jota and Nunez’s combined.

Liverpool have other forward options on their radar but Watkins is a player who knows the Premier League well and is tried and tested in the competition. His goal-poaching efforts teamed up with Salah’s incredible threat could really level up Liverpool’s attack next season.

Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace

Another Premier League target Liverpool are linked with is Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze. Football Insider recently reported that the Reds have entered the race for the midfielder’s signature, who is said to cost similar to Watkins at £60 million.

The report states that there are ‘concerns over Eze’s consistency and ability to step up’ but the midfielder has eight goals and 11 assists in all competitions so far this season and has often been the difference for Palace when it comes to results.

The 26-year-old has occasionally played on the left-wing but is an attacking midfielder by trade. His numbers would be beneficial to the Reds’ engine room and would likely even be boosted with the standard of players around him.

It’s worth noting that Eze’s numbers come from a midtable club, who seriously struggled to find their groove at the start of the season and went their eight opening games without a win. His influence has been the difference between a draw and a loss or a win and a draw on ten occasions this season, whether that be through a goal or an assist.

Liverpool are starting to see their midfield really blossom with Alexis Mac Allister in particular impressing. But their rotation has been a little underwhelming as far as title-winning standards go. Having another goal-scoring midfielder on the roster will only further benefit Liverpool’s threat in attack, which has lacked on occasion this season.

Scorelines including their recent 1-0 win over Leicester City, 2-2 draw against Manchester United and 2-2 draw with Fulham sparked frustration, despite them not losing the fixtures. Had Liverpool been more clinical in front of goal, results like these could have been more convincing, which is where statement goal-scoring signings come in to boost the Reds’ already output.
