The Red Devils could look to beat Spurs to a big money swoop this summer

Three Lions, four Eagles. It feels like a pub quiz question in the making; which Premier League club had more representatives in England’s Euro 2024 squad than any other? Not Arsenal or Manchester City or Liverpool, but little old Crystal Palace, in all of their striped humility.

Of course, there are caveats to be made; Dean Henderson is very much an emergency goalkeeping option; Adam Wharton, for all of his precociousness, is not expected to start many matches; Marc Guehi has been thrust into a position of prominence purely due to Harry Maguire’s injury woes. And then there is Eberechi Eze. Again, like Wharton, his minutes are more likely to come off the bench if at all, but it is testament to the progress that the Palace talisman has made in recent times that he has been afforded a place in Gareth Southgate’s plans while the likes of Jack Grealish and James Maddison watch on from afar.

That progress has not gone unnoticed at a domestic level, either. For a good while now, Eze has been perpetually linked with a high profile transfer to one of the Premier League’s heaviest hitters. In recent days, speculation has whipped up with regards to Tottenham’s apparent interest in the 25-year-old. There are claims that Spurs are willing to smash their own transfer record by meeting that £60 million release clause supposedly written into Eze’s contract at Selhurst Park, but by no means are they the only interested party.

Lurking on the periphery are Manchester United, a club achingly familiar with the vacuous inches of the gossip columns. The understanding is that the Red Devils trail Spurs in the race for Eze’s signature, but that they are willing to try and hijack any prospective deal for the playmaker. What’s more, they very probably should.

It is no grand secret that United are in need for attacking reinforcements. And defensive reinforcements. And perhaps goalkeeping reinforcements too. This summer promises to be one of reconstruction at Old Trafford, and players like Eze feel like exactly the kind of talent that the Red Devils should be looking to sign.

The Palace midfielder is a versatile, purposeful attacking presence - one capable of beating defenders on a whim, and of creating moments of magic from seeming nothingness. Whether operating through the centre or out on the left, he is rarely anything other than superb, and only fellow sought-after asset Michael Olise averaged a higher average match rating for the Eagles last season, according to stats gurus Whoscored. With a goal every 188 minutes in the Premier League over the course of 2023/24, Eze contributes plenty in terms of his material output too, and with every passing campaign he feels more and more like a player who is ready for a crack at the top six.

Whether that opportunity comes with Spurs, United, or somebody else entirely remains to be seen, but if the option presents itself, then the Red Devils would be foolish not go all out to beat their rivals from North London to his signature this summer.
