Manchester United’s relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be approaching boiling point. It has not been a fairytale return for Ronaldo, who was heavily linked with an exit from Old Trafford over the summer. The Portuguese superstar did enjoy a relatively healthy scoring season last term, but this campaign has been very different.

New United boss Erik ten Hag has approached Ronaldo with a much firmer hand, showing no fear in leaving the veteran on the bench for the benefit of his team. Ten Hag has not only put Ronaldo on the bench for key games, but he has left him there on a number of occasions, leading to friction.

Last week, Ronaldo refused to come off the bench for United and left the game early, walking down the tunnel at Old Trafford before full-time. Those actions led to condemnation from Ten Hag and the club, with a large fine following.

Ronaldo was then left out of United’s squad to face Chelsea over the weekend, and it seems boiling point is approaching, and according to The I, options are now being explored to ensure the Portuguese star leaves in January. Ronaldo is out of contract in the summer, but it’s no secret he comes with huge wages, even if his fee is not likely to be all that large.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, tried to secure an exit in the summer, but there were no takers, and there are fears that situation could be repeated this January, especially with the way Ronaldo is acting currently. The report claims United are so keen to let that they are willing to offload him for free if a buyer cannot be found.

It’s claimed no decision has been made on Ronaldo’s long-term future just yet, but United appear to be keen to move on from the situation, and Ronaldo’s agent, Mendes, is still said to be seeking a new club for his biggest client.
