Manchester United are going to begin a new era after the international break and they need a new superstar to back the new manager.

It's probably three months later than they needed it, but Manchester United have managed to pull a chestnut out of a blazing fire after it became apparent they were heading nowhere under Erik ten Hag. This was a decision that should have been made in the summer, but the surprise FA Cup win delayed that choice. As the saying goes, though, better late than never.

The club has now agreed to sign the highly-rated Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, considered by many to be one of the brightest emerging talents in football management. Amorim has earned trust through his accomplishments in Portugal, where he broke the long-standing dominance of Benfica and Porto in the league. At United, he’ll face a similar task, waking a sleeping giant and wresting the Premier League title from direct rivals Manchester City, a feat that will require significant new signings.

AC Milan, which has become more of a selling club in recent years, is reportedly willing to let go of Portuguese superstar Rafael Leão for only £60million in the upcoming transfer window, a move Manchester United should pursue aggressively. Leão is precisely the type of signing United once prioritised: a player approaching his peak, proven in a major league, and able to play in multiple positions.

Leão has been leading Milan admirably, often pushing them beyond expectations, and is now looking for a club that matches his ambitions. Although Barcelona currently leads the race to sign him, Leão, who idolised Cristiano Ronaldo growing up, would likely jump at the chance to be the first major signing under his fellow countryman, Amorim, who is also quietly assembling a formidable coaching staff.

One of Amorim's strengths at Sporting has been his ability to get the best out of wingers, and few have terrorised European defences in recent years like Leão. However, even he would admit there’s still untapped potential in his game.

Moving to United would also let him follow in the footsteps of Portuguese greats like Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, both of whom arrived at Old Trafford with a point to prove. The proposed fee is modest for today’s market, where average players often command three times the price, and United have the budget for such a deal.

United has a long history of Portuguese players settling well in Manchester, including current club captain Bruno Fernandes, so adaptation should not be an issue. Few players are capable of defining matches and being game-changers at this price point, and even if Leão's wages are high, the move would still make financial sense.

Every manager wants backing, and soon enough, United will be looking for players to support their new boss and strengthen the team. With Leão already linked to United, there’s no better time to make this deal happen, especially with both the club and player seeking a fresh start.
