There is still plenty of transfer business to be done in the Premier League before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

It has been a dreary summer. Like a relegation candidate with an increasingly doomed outlook, rarely has it managed to string two bright days together, and instead it has shot by in a blur of overcast weather and general disappointment.

One thing that has not disappointed, however, is the transfer market. What a segue. The summer window has been as lively and as unpredictable as ever, with plenty of drama, plenty of shocks, and plenty of exorbitant fees thrown about with reckless abandon.

But with literally hours left before Friday evening’s 11pm deadline, what are the biggest prospective Premier League deals that could still happen? Well, dear reader, I’m glad you asked...

Ansu Fati to Brighton

Right out of the blocks, what an unbelievable piece of business this would be for Brighton, and what a testament to just how far the Seagulls have come in recent years. Often touted as one of the most promising young attacking talents in world football, it would appear that a loan deal to bring Ansu Fati to the Premier League from Barcelona is edging ever closer to completion.

Disappointingly, there will be no option-to-buy written into the agreement, but what a coup this would be regardless. Exciting times on the south coast.

Cole Palmer to Chelsea

One that came right out of left-field, Chelsea appear intent on luring Palmer away from Manchester City before Friday’s deadline, and the understanding is that the treble winners might not stand in his way. Arguably the most overtly prodigious prospect to emerge from City’s own youth system since Phil Foden, the early signs this season have suggested that Palmer could in for a breakout campaign, but his big shot may come at Stamford Bridge, and not at the Etihad. Genuinely shocking stuff.

Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool

Don’t know if you’ve heard, but Liverpool are after a midfielder. Following a summer exodus of sorts, the Reds have been forced into a hurried rebuild of their engine room in the latter stages of the window, with Wataru Endo already arriving, and Gravenberch potentially hot on his heels.

Talks are underway between the Bayern Munich talent and Anfield chiefs, and if all goes to plan he could be unveiled as a Liverpool player at some point in the coming hours.

Matheus Nunes to Manchester City

After weeks of speculation, it seems as if Matheus Nunes is the fortunate candidate who has been selected to join Pep Guardiola’s trophy-winning juggernaut. Recent updates suggest that a formal agreement is in place between City and Wolves, and that the midfielder is expected in Manchester to complete a switch imminently. Quite where he fits into Pep’s masterplan remains to be seen.

Marc Cucurella to Manchester United

Manchester United are positively desperate - desperate I tells ya - to sign a left-back of some description before the transfer window closes on Friday. With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both out injured, Erik ten Hag has resorted to playing Diogo Dalot out of position, but would much rather secure a more sustainable solution in the coming hours. A loan agreement for Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella is their priority, but they also have half an eye trained on Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon and Lyon’s Nicolas Tagliafico. Watch this space.

Clement Lenglet to Aston Villa

Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet spent last season out on loan with Tottenham, and there have been repeated claims that Spurs were keen on taking him back to North London this summer. Naturally, then, he is expected to sign for... Aston Villa.

Unai Emery needs another centre-back after losing the integral Tyrone Mings to a horror injury on the opening weekend, and looks to have pilfered the Frenchman from Ange Postecoglou’s grasp. Alongside the likes of Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby, Youri Tielemans, and Nicolo Zaniolo, his arrival would cap off a wonderful summer of recruitment for the Villans.

Sofyan Amrabat to Manchester United

A saga that has trundled along all summer, United still remain interested in enacting a late raid for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. The player has been training on his own in Italy, and it is understood that talks are underway that would take him to Old Trafford on an initial loan agreement.

Financial Fair Play could prevent the Red Devils from launching a permanent bid before Friday’s deadline, but a temporary solution could be found as Ten Hag looks to provide cover and competition for the superlative Casemiro.

Ivan Toney to Chelsea

Is there anything that screams ‘Todd Boehly transfer genius’ more vehemently than a swoop for a player who isn’t allowed to play football until January 16th 2024? I think not. Ivan Toney is, of course, currently serving a lengthy ban for betting-related offences, but Chelsea are reportedly undeterred by his unavailbility, and may look to sign him from Brentford regardless.

Mo Salah to the Saudi Pro League

The prospective deal that all Liverpool fans are praying doesn’t come to fruition. In recent days, speculation has gathered pace about a potential Middle Eastern swoop for the Anfield talisman, and the worrying part is that those whispers are refusing to go away.

Al-Ittihad are understood to be the most stringent chasers of the Egyptian King, with a bid of around £118 million said to be in the offing, but whether the Reds cave as a result of such a lucrative proposal, only time will tell. To further complexify matters, the Saudi transfer market closes a week after the Premier League’s does, and as a consequence, there is a real possibility that Liverpool are left in a position where Salah departs and no replacement can be sourced. Very, very scary.
