Manchester United team news, injury updates and predicted XI as they prepare to travel to Turf Moor for an 8pm on Saturday evening.

Manchester United will be bidding to avoid a fourth straight defeat across all competitions when they come up against Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday night. The Red Devils have already lost three of their opening five top flight matches this term - their worst start to a domestic campaign since 1989 - and find themselves 13th in the table, nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City, heading into the weekend.

A lacklustre 3-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford last Saturday was followed by a 4-3 loss in Wednesday evening’s Champions League curtain-raiser against Bayern Munich, and the pressure surrounding manager Erik ten Hag continues to mount as his injury-hit squad struggles for rhythm and consistency.

For their part, Burnley have endured a tricky return to the Premier League thus far, and have taken just one point from their opening four matches. That draw came against Nottinham Forest on Monday night, with the Clarets arguably unfortunate not to come away from the City Ground with their first win of the new campaign after a contentious VAR intervention ruled out a potential winner for Vincent Kompany’s men.

Manchester United team news

United have been hit with a raft of injuries in the early stages of the new season, and were missing nine players for their trip to Germany in midweek. Defensively, they look set to be without Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, and Harry Maguire against Burnley, but there could be better news regarding Raphael Varane, who may be fit enough to make his return on Saturday having trained earlier in the week.

There are also promising signs where Mason Mount is concerned. The £60 million midfielder has missed United’s last four outings due to a muscular injury, but Ten Hag himself has namechecked the clash against the Clarets as a potential return date. Fellow summer signing Sofyan Amrabat is highly unlikely to feature, however, while precocious talent Kobbie Mainoo remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

Elsewhere, Amad Diallo is still out, while Brazilian winger Anthony has been granted a leave of absence for the time being, and Jadon Sancho is training away from the first team squad amid ongoing tension with his manager.

Rasmus Hojlund should start at the point of attack after scoring his first goal in a United shirt against Bayern on Wednesday, while Andre Onana is likely to continue in net despite questions over his form since arriving from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window.

Full Manchester United Predicted XI

Andre Onana; Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Sergio Reguilon; Casemiro, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes; Facundo Pellistri, Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford.

Burnley team news

Burnley could welcome full-back Vitinho back into the matchday fold after his recovery from a knee injury sustained at the end of August, while Aaron Ramsey may feature in some capacity having overcome a concussion.

Elsewhere, defender Hjalmar Ekdal is sidelined with a serious knee problem, and Darko Churlinov and Michael Obafemi are also expected to be absent. Lyle Taylor was sent off against Nottingham Forest and will therefore be suspended.

Full Burnley predicted XI

James Trafford; Connor Roberts, Ameen Al-Dakhil, Jordan Beyer, Charlie Taylor; Josh Brownhill, Josh Cullen; Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson, Zeki Amdouni, Luca Koleosho; Jay Rodriguez.
