Newcastle United are hoping to enhance their squad with two marquee signings this summer

Newcastle United owners have made no secret of their desire to one day transform the club into one of the biggest and most successful teams in world football.

“What's the ambition? To be number one, that’s the ambition,” said Yasir Al-Rumayann on the We Are Newcastle United Amazon documentary. “Finishing in the top four, our revenue is increasing. The more revenue we have, the more players we will have ready to compete at the highest level.”

Newcastle have already gone on a great journey since the PIF takeover. They beat the drop in 2021/22 - becoming the first team in history to survive after a 15-match winless start - and went on to secure Champions League qualification and a Carabao Cup final just a year later against the odds. However, over the last 18 months amid the threat of breaching PSR constraints, Newcastle were forced to tread lightly to avoid breaking any rules.

The sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson for lucrative fees to Brighton and Forest epitomised what Eddie Howe described as deals for ‘business rather than football reasons’ , while in January the likes of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly were both sacrificed to balance the books. However, there is a growing feeling from several sources close to Newcastle that the club will once again be in prime position to spend big in the summer with I News reporting that an estimated £100m spending spree is lined up.

Fabrizio Romano understands the Magpies have already agreed personal terms with one goalkeeper target while another big-name could be added to bolster the attack.

Newcastle United agree terms with James Trafford

Newcastle United simply love signing goalkeepers. At this stage with Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie they currently have five on the books - but it would be hard to see any of them still being at the club in three years time.

Pope has up until recently been the first choice between the sticks. But the 32-year-old has struggled with form and fitness following his return from a lengthy shoulder injury last season. He is undoubtedly a great shot-stopper but has been heavily criticised for his distribution which is an increasingly important factor in the modern game. Meanwhile, Dubravka, who has recently penned a new deal, is 36 and approaching the twilight years of his career.

This had led to long-running speculation that Newcastle are lining up a move for highly-rated 22-year-old Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford. The Clarets ace, according to Fabrizio Romano had already agreed personal terms with Newcastle in 2024, leaving the Magpies with the small matter of agreeing a transfer fee

Trafford has kept 23 clean sheets this season and has remarkably on an 11-match streak without conceding a goal , in a run which also saw him save two penalties against Sunderland earlier in the season.

The ex-Manchester City man, who played alongside Anthony Gordon in England’s Under-21 winning team, made history in that tournament by winning the competition without conceding a single goal. He also saved a last-minute penalty from Spain in the final.

He was relegated last season with the Clarets but has already achieved a great deal in his young career and looks destined to have a long career in the top-flight. TalkSport understands Newcastle are confident of getting the deal done and believes Burnley are seeking a figure of £30m.

Newcastle prepared to meet Bryan Mbuemo asking price

Newcastle United have transformed their squad in all areas of the pitch except the right-wing position where the club’s only option remains £12m star Jacob Murphy, who joined back in 2017. The Magpies have a wealth of attacking options on the left with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes both providing creative spark for star striker Alexander Isak and it now appears that sporting director Paul Mitchell is desperate to bring a right-sided option to the fray.

In the past, Newcastle World has reported that Bryan Mbeumo is the club’s dream target in that position due to his immense speed, strength, work ethic and eye for goal. The 25-year-old is currently enjoying a career best season and is on 14 goals and three assists from 25 league matches for the Bees this term.

Football Insider understands Brentford have set their asking price at £50m and claims Newcastle are willing to pay that amount to get the Cameroonian to St James’ Park.

“He’s been a top target for Eddie Howe and we know they want to strengthen that right-wing position, so he looks like the ideal player to do that,” said former Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown.
