The summer transfer window used to be something of a non-event for Newcastle United supporters as the Magpies haggled over paying even the most meagre of loan fees and resisted the temptation to compete with their Premier League rivals in an increasingly lucrative market.

Attempting to chase the ‘perfect deal’ and haggling over the fine details in any transaction can be viewed as good business sense - but more often than not, that stance proved detrimental to any hopes of progression and improvement. Yet now, with a PIF-led consortium in charge of the pursestrings and the lure of Champions League football, this summer could be one of the most exciting in living memory for Magpies supporters.

Links with the likes of James Maddison, Kieran Tierney, Dominik Szobozslai and Khephren Thuram are not without foundation as the United hierachy look to boost Eddie Howe’s ranks in a bid to challenge on a number of fronts next season. Yet there will also be a need to trim what is a squad full of players that have struggled to make a sustained impact under the former Bournemouth boss and their departures will also have the additional benefit of helping the Magpies contend with Financial Fair Play regulations.

With the opening of the summer transfer window just days away, 3AddedMinutes assesses the players that could depart from St James Park over the coming weeks and months - with valuations provided by TransferMarkt.

Ryan Fraser - £6m

The Scotland winger looked set for something of a renaissance when he was reunited with his former Bournemouth manager in November 2021. Despite the fractured nature of his departure from the Cherries, Fraser spoke warmly of Howe and his comments were returned with an equally positive response from the Magpies manager.

But the last year has been a non-event for Fraser, who is believed to have been frustrated by not being allowed to leave St James Park during the season and has spent the last few months training with the Magpies Under-21s side. A parting of the ways feels inevitable as the 29-year-old continues to look on from the outside with the summer transfer window approaching.

Martin Dubravka - £2m

It has been a stange season for Dubravka. He unquestionably entered last summer as the Magpies number one goalkeeper but ended it looking on from the sidelines after Nick Pope’s arrival saw Howe opt for the England stopper when the campaign got underway with a home win against Nottingham Forest.

Dubravka’s frustration led to a loan switch to Manchester United but he was limited to just two Carabao Cup appearances during his time with the Red Devils. The Slovakian international returned to Newcastle in January and made two starts and a substitute appearance before the end of the season. Newcastle’s goalkeeping options look set for chances over the summer and it would be no surprise to see Dubravka depart on a permanent basis, despite Howe stating he would like to keep him around.

Jamaal Lascelles - £6m

Despite being Magpies club captain, Lascelles made just 11 appearances in all competitions, with just five of them coming as part of Eddie Howe’s starting lineup. The form of regular centre-back partnership Fabian Schar and Sven Botman has played a key role in United’s successful push for a Champions League place but it has also left Lascelles watching on from the sidelines.

To his credit, the 29-year-old has not let his frustration impact on his professional attitude and has not caused issues for Howe and his coaching team. But it seems unlikely he will want to continue playing a supporting role for a second year, even though opportunities for game-time may increase with his side competing in European competition once again next season.

Jamal Lewis - £7m

Howe has repeatedly stated that Lewis has a future at the club and is slowly working his way back to full fitness after some difficult injury problems. Injuries has been a constant theme of Jamal Lewis’ time at Newcastle and the former Norwich City left-back made just one start in all competitions last season and just three other appearances as a substitute during the campaign. There is no doubting the Northern Ireland international has talent but he desperately needs game-time and with United reportedly keen on bringing in a left-back this summer, it seems he may have to get it elsewhere.

Javier Manquillo - £2m

The former Liverpool and Sunderland full-back has never really let United down, despite playing a backup role to a number of other defenders during his time at St James Park. There is no chance of him finding his way into the side ahead of Eddie Howe and with Emil Krafth approaching full fitness and former West Ham United defender Harrison Ashby impressing the Magpies coaching staff, it seems highly likely Manquillo may well get a summer move, with a number of La Liga clubs said to be keen to take him back to Spain.

Karl Darlow - £1m

Darlow enjoyed a very successful loan at Championship side Hull City this season. Another goalkeeper that could well leave Tyneside this summer, Darlow has impressed during a loan spell with Championship club Hull City during the second half of the season. There are strong suggestions the Tigers want to convert that into a permanent move this summer and it would be no surprise if United are open to allowing their long-serving stopper to depart in search of regular first-team football.

Jeff Hendrick - £1m

The forgotten man at St James Park. It seems shocking to discover Hendrick is still has a year left on his current Magpies deal, despite the fact he has spent the last 18 months on loan with Championship clubs Reading and Queens Park Rangers. The Republic of Ireland international will almost certainly depart this summer, as long as United can find a willing buyer.

Returning from a season-long loan spell at Championship side Norwich City, Hayden could well be another of United’s longest servents that will be heading for the exit door this summer. The former Arsenal academy man was a trusted figure for former United manager Rafa Benitez and has always given his all for the club. But with chances of forming part of Howe’s squad decreasing, it seems likely the 28-year-old will be moved on after seven years as a Magpies.

Matt Targett - £13m

Targett has just completed his first full season as a Magpie after making a permanent move to Tyneside last summer on the back of a successful loan spell at St James Park during the previous campaign. However, the form of Dan Burn and a heel injury has limited him to just eight starts in all competitions and Targett could well have further competition for a place in Eddie Howe’s side as United look to add another left-back to their ranks this summer.

With an increasingly hectic fixture schedule lying in wait, the former Aston Villa man may well stick around in the hope of being handed an opportunity to force his way into the Magpies side - but you do wonder if a suitable offer could tempt United into authorising a summer departure.

Allan Saint-Maximin - £30m

This is a tricky one to assess and you get the impression it is a similar situation for Howe and his coaching staff. On his day, Saint-Maximin is a talented winger and capable of unlocking even the most disciplined of defences, as shown by his stunning display in a 3-3 draw against Manchester City in the early weeks of last season.

But questions over his suitability for Howe’s preferred style of play still linger and with United fully aware of the need to sell to help them deal with Financial Fair Play regulations, Saint-Maximin could be allowed to depart if a suitable bid is received this summer.
