Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte believes Newcastle United have the potential to become one of the best clubs in England under the backing of their Saudi Arabian owners.

Spurs were the first team the Magpies faced at St James’ Park after PCP Partners, the Public Investment Fund and RB Sports & Media completed their £305million takeover of the club last October. The visitors emerged as 3-2 winners that day in what was also Steve Bruce’s last game in charge.

Eddie Howe was in the dugout for the reverse fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which ended in a 5-1 defeat. And ahead of the two sides’ meeting in the capital again on Sunday evening, Conte labelled United as a “future dangerous team”.

“You can see you have to consider Newcastle for the future as a dangerous team, for the title and to win trophies,” the former Premier League title-winning manager said. “They have had the potential to go into the market and become one of the best teams in England.

“For this reason, many clubs have to pay great attention because, in my opinion, I see Newcastle in the future being really dangerous for a place in the Champions League and win trophies.”

Newcastle could be a threat to Spurs this weekend after a 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday extended the club’s unbeaten run to six matches. Howe’s side, who sit 6th in the table, have lost just once this campaign and statistically have the best defence in the division.
