The latest injury news and possible return dates from Newcastle United.

What a difference a week has made for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United. A week that started with a disappointing defeat against Chelsea ended with a powerful display in a home win against Arsenal as the Gunners’ title hopes took a blow on Tyneside for the second consecutive season.

Sandwiched in between those two games was a much improved display on home soil as Howe’s side claimed immediate revenge on Chelsea with a 1-0 win in a Carabao Cup tie at St. James’ Park. The reward was a quarter-final home tie against Brentford that will play part of the hectic run towards the crucial Christmas period.

But where do the Magpies squad sit ahead of a potentially pivotal period in their season? There are some key players still watching on from the sidelines and some that are yet to feature throughout the opening three months of the campaign. So what is the latest injury news and the possible return dates for the Magpies absent stars?

Sven Botman

The Dutch defender was integral in the Magpies push for a Champions League spot two seasons ago but found his second year on Tyneside cut short by an ACL injury. He has spoken positively about his battle to return to full fitness in recent weeks and there is some hope he could return to full training by the end of the year. Speaking last month, Magpies boss Howe gave an update on Botman’s recovery, saying: “He's hitting the right strength markers and looking really good. We haven't seen him in training yet, and we probably won't see him until after the next break. But he is closing in. The reality is that we're probably looking more towards Christmas time.” Possible return date: Late December.

Jamaal Lascelles

The long-serving defender suffered a serious knee injury last season and is yet to appear during the current campaign as he continues a painstaking recovery process. There are some hopes Lascelles could return towards the end of the year but January seems a more realistic option. Speaking last month, the Magpies club captain said: “I should be back on the grass soon and jogging in the next few weeks. It'll take me a while to build up from there, but I'm happy to be ticking those boxes, and now it's about getting my boots back on and progressing slowly that way.” Possible return date: January 2025.

Kieran Trippier

Trippier suffered a hamstring injury in last month’s goalless draw at Everton and has spent time away from Tyneside as he looks to regain full fitness. Howe said the former England full-back would be out for a few weeks and that would mean Sunday’s visit to Nottingham Forest could be a possible return date - but it seems likely a cautious approach will be taken and Trippier will be back in contention after the international break. Possible return date: Late November.

Jacob Murphy

The former Norwich City winger appeared in the 2-1 defeat against Chelsea last month but a hamstring injury meant he missed the Carabao Cup tie with the Blues and the weekend home win against Arsenal. At the time, Howe suggested the injury was not serious but Murphy remains a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest. Possible return date: Late November.

Callum Wilson

The England striker is yet to feature this season after suffering a back injury during the same. That came after his involvement in the back end of last season was hampered by a pectoral injury sustained at Nottingham Forest. There had been some initial hope Wilson would return for the recent double header with Chelsea or Saturday’s home game with Arsenal - but it now seems likely his return will come after the upcoming international break. Possible return date: Late November.
