Newcastle United are currently lurking on the outskirts of the Premier League top four after banking ten points so far this season. The Magpies have won three and drawn one of their opening five fixtures but a tough visit to Craven Cottage last weekend saw them register their first defeat of the campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s side were trailing 2-1 at half-time and were headed for a defeat until John Stones’ heroic late equaliser. City will now be eager to get back to winning ways but they have suffered a huge injury blow to Rodri ahead of their meeting with Newcastle.
While Eddie Howe’s side prepare to host the reigning champions, we’ve taken a look at their own latest fitness news and updates.

Sven Botman’s ACL heartbreak has been a tough period for both him and the club. After undergoing surgery, the defender has shared updates on his recovery and last month he uploaded a number of photos in training gear alongside the caption ‘Step by Step Closer’.
Naturally, there is no firm date on when Botman will return to team but Howe said in August that Newcastle are hoping he ‘will be closer’ towards the end of the year.
Jamaal Lascelles
Similar to Botman, Jamaal Lacelles has been ruled out of action with an ACL injury, which hit the club just weeks after his fellow centre-back suffered his. Neither player has been able to feature so far this season but they are looking at similar return timelines. In April, following Lascelles’ surgery Howe said he was ‘already on the road to recovery’ and has provided the same update as Botman regarding being closer to match fitness towards the end of the year.

Callum Wilson missed Newcastle’s pre-season fixtures and is yet to be included in Howe’s 2024/25 squads as he continues to recover from an ongoing back injury. The boss admitted last month that he was ‘happy with his progress’ but a new update earlier this month revealed Wilson is not ready to return yet.
“Callum is a little bit behind where we want him to be, we envisaged he might be training for the games coming up, but he is not there yet.” Howe then followed up a week later stating that they were now looking at ‘the next international break’ before Wilson might make his return.
Lewis Miley
Luck hasn’t been on Lewis Miley’s side this year when it comes to injuries. After his breakthrough campaign was cut short by a back injury, the 18-year-old did not make pre-season after suffering a fractured metatarsal. Miley has returned to training but he is still ‘a long way off’ being back in contention.
