Where could David Moyes turn after Harry Maguire’s move from Manchester United to West Ham United appears on the brink of collapse?

It is hard to quantify where David Moyes’ frustration levels currently sit after the West Ham United manager suffered another blow in what has already been challenging summer in the transfer market.

For the majority of the last six months, speculation over the future of Hammers captain Declan Rice had dominated the headlines prior to his £105million move to London rivals Arsenal. Moyes’ mood will hardly have been helped by the news treble winners Manchester City are ramping up their attempts to sign another of the Hammers star men, midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

Slowly but surely, new faces are arriving and there are hopes a third summer signing is on the cards after Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez and Southampton star James Ward-Prowse both put pen-to-paper at the London Stadium over the last ten days. For all of the speculation surrounding the move, it now seems unlikely that third new addition will be Manchester United defender Harry Maguire after uncertainty over the England centre-back’s desire to move to West Ham led to the deal stalling after the two clubs agreed a reported £30million fee.

Maguire has been warned about what could lie in wait should he opt against a move away from Old Trafford as Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag said: “He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back. He is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us? But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to go, then he has to make a decision. But I’m happy with him.”

But what of West Ham and Moyes? Where do they turn after the collapse of a deal that seemed to suit all parties and one that had been widely expected to go through in the coming days? 3AddedMinutes looks at five possible options as Moyes looks to strengthen his defensive ranks before the end of the summer transfer window.

Fikayo Tomori - AC Milan

This one seems to tick a lot of boxes for Moyes and it could be a deal that would work for Tomori too. The AC Milan defender brings Premier League experience from his time at Chelsea and has also proven himself on the continent after helping the Serie A giants to the Scudetto last year as well as featuring in the Champions League and Europa League during his time in Italy.

From Tomori’s point of view, becoming a regular in an England defence that seems to have a vacancy or two should be the aim and being back in the Premier League and under the eyes of Gareth Southgate will only boost his chances of forcing his way into the Three Lions squad.

Konstantinos Mavropanos - Stuttgart

This move could be quite a challenge as the former Arsenal centre-back is believed to be attracting attention from several clubs across Europe after impressing in the Bundesliga. Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both been linked with the Greece international and clubs in Spain and Italy are also said to be monitoring the situation. West Ham are believed to be aware of the 25-year-old, who could be tempted by an opportunity to return to England after he made seven Premier League appearances during his time with the Gunners.

Jonathan Tah - Bayer Leverkusen

Another Bundesliga centre-back that is said to be attracting serious interest from several clubs. The 16-times capped Germany international still has two years left on his current contract with Leverkusen and would command a sizable fee. But he would also offer Moyes plenty of experience of competing in European competition after he made 58 appearances in the Champions League and Europa League during his eight-year stay at the BayArena.

Trevoh Chalobah - Chelsea

Another deal that could work for all parties. There has been speculation Chalobah could be allowed to leave Chelsea before the end of the month as the Blues continue the overhaul of their squad. Competition for places in Mauricio Pochettino’s defence has increased since the summer arrival of Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill’s return to Stamford Bridge after a successful loan spell at Brighton and Hove Albion. Chalobah would command a significant fee but he would bring Premier League experience and would add further depth to Moyes’ options in defence.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis - Manchester City

Untested in the Premier League, there would be an element of risk about making a move for the Manchester City youngster and patience would be required. But there is no doubt Harwood-Bellis has plenty of promise and he showed his class by captaining England to their European Under-21 Championship win during the summer. Breaking into Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City side could prove a step too far for now - but a loan move away from the Etihad Stadium could prove to be a solution that suits the player and both clubs before the end of the window.
