Prince Harry is in the headlines again following the publishing of his memoir ‘Spare’, which describes how he felt overshadowed by his brother William and others during his time with the royal family.
And that got us thinking about the footballers past and present who have been overlooked for one reason or another, whether they were simply underrated, or whether they were victim to being overshadowed by more popular teammates. We have included current and former players, including Premier League stars and some of the standouts from the continent.
Join us below as we take a look at 10 overlooked stars in no particular order:
1. Ricardo Carvalho
Despite the three Premier League titles and five domestic cups he won at Chelsea, Carvalho was often cast under John Terry’s shadow. The Portuguese was a brilliant defender who won so much during his career.
2. Dani Carvajal
Carvajal is still playing at the highest level, but he has never been the player yout hink about the dominant Real Madrid team. Perhaps that’s Sergio Ramos’ fault, but Carvajal has been irreplaceable on the right side of Real Madrid’s defence, winning everything with Los Blancos.
3. Michael Carrick
Carrick was often overlooked due to the incredible talent Manchester United boasted during his time with the club, but the Red Devils wouldn’t have won five of their Premier League titles and a Champions League without him.
4. Sadio Mane
Mane was always thought of as a key part of Liverpool’s star-studded attack, but Mo Salah’s presence meant he was a little undervalued. The Reds thought they could live without him - they were wrong.
