We begin Wednesday's Premier League transfer rumour round-up with suggestions from Italy that Tammy Abraham could be in line to make a sensational return to Chelsea. The Englishman is currently on the books at AS Roma, alongside Blues loanee Romelu Lukaku, and according to an update from Corriere dello Sport, could be used as a makeweight to ensure that the Belgian's stay at Stadio Olimpico becomes permanent this summer.

It is understood that Roma chiefs are unwilling to pay the £36.8 million fee required to keep Lukaku in the Italian capital, but could look to secure a 'discount' by sending Abraham back to Stamford Bridge as part of any prospective agreement. The possibility 'remains on the table', although Roma are unlikely to act before June or July, when their financial situation is made a little clearer.

The 3AM Verdict: This could be a masterstroke. Abraham left Chelsea having never truly fulfilled his potential at Stamford Bridge, but there is no denying his quality as a centre forward, and in one fell swoop, the Blues could go a long way towards solving their persistent striker conundrum while getting rid of a certified flop in the process. There are no guarantees at this early stage, but it might turn out to be an arrangement that suits everybody involved.

United cool on Malen interest

Elsewhere, continental journalist Florian Plettenberg has delivered an update on the future of Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen. The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks, but it is now understood that the Red Devils are 'not seriously pushing' to sign the Dutchman.

Instead Arsenal, Liverpool, and a number of other unspecified Premier League clubs are considered to be 'more concrete options' for the player. Dortmund could demand as much as £42.7 million for Malen, with the player himself happy to leave at the end of the season.

The 3AM Verdict: While this news may be a little galling for United fans, it represents a promising update for both Arsenal and Liverpool. Malen is an effective and prolific winger, and he would surely be a welcome addition to the upper echelons of the Premier League.

City contact Robinson representatives

And finally, according to AS Roma Live, Manchester City have already contacted the representatives of Fulham full-back Antonee Robinson ahead of a potential summer transfer. The USA international has impressed during his stint at Craven Cottage, and is understood to be attracting attention from last season's treble winners, as well as Premier League title rivals Liverpool.

Indeed, the Reds are also said to have contacted Fulham, with both of Robinson's suitors willing to pay up to £34.4 million for his services. For their part, the Cottagers are understood to be preparing for the defender's looming exit, and have identified AS Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola as his potential replacement.

The 3AM Verdict: It feels like a matter of time before Robinson is snapped up by one of the Premier League's heaviest hitters. The American has been in fine form for Fulham this season, and it is easy to envisage him making the transition to Champions League football sooner rather than later. If the fee is decent and Fulham can readily find a replacement, this could be a deal that benefits all parties.
