The Blues are understood to be keen on a high profile Elland Road raid

When you think of the old adage, ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’, perhaps two of the last parties you might naturally associate with a mutual back-scratching would be Leeds United and Chelsea. Like a family blood feud that seeps through generation after generation, nobody can concretely remember why the two clubs harbour such a disdain for each other, only that they do. (Of course, it stems back to a series of brutally physical contests throughout the ‘60s, culminating in the 1970 FA Cup final, but don’t let facts get in the way of a tangential opening paragraph.)

And yet, now we read reports suggesting that the pair could be about to go into business - albeit reluctant business, from a Leeds perspective - with each other. According to online outlet TEAMtalk, the Blues have held talks with Elland Road winger Crysencio Summerville over a prospective summer transfer. For what it’s worth, the Dutchman has also been approached by French outfit Rennes, but as far as Premier League interest goes, Chelsea are right there, front and centre.

In some respects, this is no grand shock. After Leeds failed to win promotion last season, and coming off the back of a campaign in which he registered 21 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, it has felt like a creeping inevitability that Summerville would end up in a major European top flight one way or another this window. And given Chelsea’s propensity for signing anything with a youthful pulse and a proclivity for running very fast at full-backs, nobody can claim to be truly surprised by their apparent interest.

The suggestion is that the 20-year-old will fetch a minimum of £25 million, and that the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain, Brighton, and Bayer Leverkusen have all cast a beady eye over him in recent weeks. But still it is Chelsea who look to be fronting the chasing pack, and perhaps there is a way in which they could sweeten a deal for the winger, much as Tottenham did by ensuring defender Joe Rodon headed in the opposite direction to precocious talent Archie Gray earlier this month.

You see, the Blues recently completed a deal to bring teenage attacker Omari Kellyman to Stamford Bridge from Aston Villa. The forward set Todd Boehly and his minions back around £19 million, and there are high hopes for what he can add to Enzo Maresca’s squad. Predominantly a forward-thinking midfielder, the 18-year-old is also capable of playing as an out-and-out striker and a winger, scoring seven goals in 11 Premier League 2 outings last term.

That being said, he is sorely lacking in proper first team experience; at the time of writing, he has just six senior appearances to his name, totalling around 148 minutes of action. And while it would not be unthinkable for Chelsea to throw him in at the deep end, there surely has to be an argument made for sending him out on loan to accrue more regular, prolonged exposure elsewhere, before bringing him back and reaping the benefits.

It does not take a neurosurgeon to join the dots here. Why not offer up a Kellyman loan as part of any potential agreement for Summerville, then? That way, Chelsea get their man, while Leeds also bring in an exciting attacking presence capable of significantly softening the blow of the Dutchman’s unwanted exit. It could be a solution that suits both parties very, very much.
