The latest Manchester United injury news and expected return dates ahead of key Europa League and Premier League matches.

Manchester United face two important matches this week – first they travel to Istanbul to face José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe in the Europa League, and then they’re in London for a game against West Ham United. Unfortunately for under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag, the injury situation isn’t getting much better.

No fewer than nine players are either out or doubtful for Thursday’s game in Turkey, including several players on the cusp of a comeback from long-term injuries. With the club in need of some wins to lift the mood at Old Trafford, we’ve collated all of the latest injury news and the afflicted players’ likely return dates to find out if there is any good news.

Kobbie Mainoo

The gifted midfielder picked up a muscular injury, believed to be to his thigh or hamstring, in the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa just over a fortnight ago, and was forced to withdraw from England’s Nations League squad as a result. Since then, Ten Hag has confirmed that Mainoo will be out for “a couple of weeks”, and he is not expected to play any part against Fenerbahçe or West Ham. The first game of November, when Manchester United take on Chelsea at home, is the most optimistic date for a return, but some reports suggest that he could be out until the next international break in the middle of the month.

Luke Shaw

It was originally hoped that the England left-back would be back in September, but complications arising from his calf injury means that Shaw has yet to make his first appearance of the campaign. He has returned to training and is building up his fitness at Carrington, but Ten Hag has said that the club will take his return “very carefully”. He is not expected to return this week, with early November more likely.

Leny Yoro

Summer signing Yoro is in a similar boat as Shaw. After picking up a foot injury in pre-season which required surgery, the £52m teenager has yet to make his competitive debut, but is likewise back in training and slowly closing in on a return. As with Shaw, he is not expected to feature in this week’s matches and will probably be eased back into action over the course of November.

Mason Mount

There have been few updates on the condition of former Chelsea midfielder Mount after he was withdrawn against Tottenham Hotspur with both a head wound and an apparent muscular issue. He played no part in the match against Brentford but neither the club nor manager have offered a timeline on his return as yet.

Casemiro

The veteran midfielder limped out of the 2-1 win over Brentford last weekend with an apparent calf issue. The club have yet to provide any updates and the Brazilian will be assessed ahead of the trip to Turkey. No prognosis or possible return date are available as it stands.

Matthijs de Ligt

The Dutch defender was forced to leave the field on three occasions against Brentford to be patched up after a head injury, with the visitors scoring the opening goal of the game while he was receiving treatment – but the good news is that he is not believed to have suffered any more serious damage, with Ten Hag saying that the player was “OK” throughout the match. He should be available to face Fenerbahçe.

Harry Maguire

The centre-back sustained an unspecified muscular injury in the Aston Villa match and told social media that he would be out for a few weeks as a result. Ahead of the game against Brentford, Ten Hag added that he would still be out for “a couple of weeks” alongside Mainoo. He is expected back in the first two weeks of November barring setbacks.

Tyrell Malacia

The Dutch left-back has been out for well over a year thanks to an anterior cruciate ligament injury but has been back in training for the last few weeks as he works to build up his fitness. He is close to a return but Ten Hag has refused to put a date on it, preferring to be cautious with Malacia’s health. He could appear on the bench at any time, but early-mid November appears to be most likely at this stage.

Toby Collyer

The young midfielder was dropped from the matchday squad against Brentford at the last minute after sustaining an injury, presumably in training. No further information was offered and the nature and extent of the problem are not known.
