Manchester United need just a point from Thursday’s Europa League clash with Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday in order to secure their progression to the next stage of the tournament.
The Red Devils also face a hectic fixture schedule between now and the World Cup break in November. Erik ten Hag’s side face six matches before the club season pauses on 13 November and, therefore, the United boss may be tempted to rotate his squad in the coming weeks.
The visit of Sheriff could offer a perfect opportunity to make a few changes, against an opponent United should dispatch with relative ease. The Moldovian side have lost their last three in the Europa League and their manager Stjepan Tomas resigned on Tuesday.
Ten Hag’s men also face a Premier League clash against West Ham United on Sunday and, although he hasn’t rotated much this season, the Dutchman is likely to prioritise the clash with the Hammers over Thursday’s encounter.
The United boss did confirm in his pre-match press conference that Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial would not be available for Thursday, although Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek are back in training and could return to the team.
Cristiano Ronaldo is another option after he was left out of the squad for the weekend draw with Chelsea. “It’s not difficult and I think we said everything and answered all the questions. He was out for one game and now he is back in the squad as usual,” Ten Hag said on Wednesday. It’s done, he’s back. I’m focused on the game and that’s important. Cristiano is involved in the squad tomorrow.”
With all that mind, here’s how we think United will line up for Thursday’s game.

1. GK: David de Gea

2. RB: Diogo Dalot
Another of Ten Hag’s trusted players, Dalot has been an almost constant this season. Wan-Bissaka is unlikely to return in time for the game, meaning the Portugal international is the only real option for United.

3. CB: Harry Maguire
Was back in training last week and should have built up some fitness, so we’re tipping him to return on Thursday.

4. CB: Victor Lindelof
A start for the Swede alongside Maguire would see Lisandro Martinez rested, a luxury Ten Hag has rarely been afforded this season.
