Manchester United make the long journey south to take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in Saturday’s late Premier League kick-off – and Erik ten Hag will be sweating on the fitness of several important players before they travel.

Marcus Rashford, Raphaël Varane, Scott McTominay and Jonny Evans are all dealing with fitness issues and risk missing out on the match, while at least five players will certainly be absent as United look to snap a three-match winless streak in the top flight.

Goalkeeper & Defence

The big question marks at the back linger over the heads of French defender Varane and veteran centre-half Evans, both of whom picked up knocks in the recent 4-3 defeat to Chelsea and eventually missed the game against Liverpool last weekend. While United have not offered up any details updates over their respective conditions as yet, Ten Hag did say ahead of the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford that “I don’t think at short notice they will return.” Assuming that pessimistic assessment is borne out, both seem unlikely to start on Saturday.

Lisandro Martínez (calf), Victor Lindelöf (hamstring), Luke Shaw (muscular) and Tyrell Malacia (knee) will all miss out for sure, meaning that if neither Varane nor Evans are back then 19-year-old Willy Kambwala will likely partner Harry Maguire at centre-back again. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is likely to continue as a makeshift left-back with Diogo Dalot on the right once more.

Midfield

Scottish midfielder McTominay was “added to the extensive injury list,” as the club put it, ahead of the match against Liverpool after he picked up an unspecified knock in training. As with Varane and Evans, no meaningful details have yet been provided and his status ahead of Saturday’s game is entirely uncertain.

Casemiro did at least manage to play the full 90 minutes against Liverpool in spite of a minor injury sustained in the Chelsea game, and there are no further known concerns in the heart of the midfield.

Forwards

Rashford was forced from the field just over an hour into the derby match against Liverpool with a knock, and once more Manchester United have not detailed exactly what the issue was. Ten Hag was, however, rather more upbeat about the forward’s fitness after the game, saying “I’m not sure but I don’t think it will be long-term.”

Anthony Martial’s absence also continues despite expectations that he would return in April following successful surgery on a groin injury three months ago. As yet, there has been no update on the Frenchman and no signs that he’s back in training at Carrington. It seems highly unlikely that he will feature this weekend.

Full predicted line-up vs. Bournemouth
