Having laboured under the weight of some serious injury issues throughout the course of the season, Manchester United’s list of absentees is finally starting to thin out a little – but that doesn’t mean that Erik ten Hag will have a fully fit squad to draw on any time soon.

As players like Casemiro and Harry Maguire make their long-awaited returns to action, others miss out, not least Lisandro Martínez. The Argentine defender sustained a serious knee injury against West Ham United and will be out for some time, and he won’t be the only player stuck on the sidelines ahead of Sunday’s visit to Luton Town in the Premier League.

Below, we’ve collated all of the latest injury news ahead of the trip to Kenilworth Road, including all of the most up-to-date information on the stricken players’ likely return dates.

Lisandro Martínez

Ten Hag described the World Cup winning centre-half as a “fighter” after his latest injury setback, and added that “we think he will still be back by the end of the season” despite having to leave the field with knee ligament damage during the West Ham game. It is estimated that he will be out for around two months, with the end of March being the most optimistic return date.

His absence means that Raphaël Varane will likely continue to partner Maguire in defence despite the likelihood that he leaves Old Trafford on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.

Mason Mount

The former Chelsea midfielder has endured a pretty torrid start to his United career and his persistent calf injury isn’t helping – he had been earmarked for a January return but has still not made the matchday squad as he continues his recovery.

United have not provided any further updates on his condition and his return date is unclear, although Ten Hag has said that he “absolutely” expects him to play again this season. The Dutchman also said that United did not plan to rush him back in order to ensure a full recovery.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The former Crystal Palace right-back has been dogged by injuries all season and was hurt again ahead of the FA Cup win over Newport County with an unspecified muscular injury in his leg – and suffered another knock in training ahead of the match against Aston Villa.

All that Ten Hag has said about his condition is that he doesn’t know the diagnosis but that it was “hopefully not too bad” – but as it stands it’s far from clear as to whether he will be available to make his return against Luton.

Tyrell Malacia

The young Dutch left-back hasn’t played this season courtesy of a serious knee over the summer, and while it was reported that he was back in light training in January, Ten Hag has since said that he is “not ready” to play just yet. United are not planning to rush him back in order to ensure a full recovery, and it is unlikely that he plays in February.

Anthony Martial

The French forward underwent successful surgery on a groin injury in January and the club has stated that he would be out for 10 weeks – which means he will likely next be available for selection at the beginning of April. He will hope to have the chance to play a few games in the run-in as a farewell before his contract expires in the summer.

Luke Shaw

Left-back Shaw was taken off at half-time in the win over Aston Villa as “a precaution” after he experienced discomfort. He is not believed to be seriously injured but United were clearly not willing to take any chances with his fitness after a long injury absence earlier in the season.

“He gave some messages about complaints,” Ten Hag said after the Villa game. "We know his history with too many injuries and we couldn't go into that risk. [It was] a very important game but we can't miss him for six weeks." He is expected to play against Luton pending any further updates from the club.
