Man Utd eye wonderkid battle with Aston Villa as Arsenal 'very interested' in £126m-rated box office striker
The latest Premier League transfer news as Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea plot January moves
Gameweek 8 of the Premier League was another enthralling spectacle of top tier English football, with the season’s narrative continuing to build as we approach the end of the 2026/27 campaign’s first quarter. Arsenal went level with Man City at the table’s summit, Man United lost yet again, and Tottenham pulled off a shock 2-0 victory away at London rivals Chelsea.

Meanwhile, thought is starting to turn towards the January transfer window. We had our say on the winners of the summer market, and the losers are quickly becoming apparent as a number of clubs look to be struggling following a spell of poor recruitment during the off-season. Plenty of clubs will be busy come the new year, as they look to get the business done that evaded them in the summer.
Today’s rumours round-up begins with Jadon Sancho - the ex-Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund star currently looking for a new club. The former England international is at a real crossroads in his career, as he looks to be snapped up on a free agent deal. A move to Getafe recently collapsed, but it appears that he could now make his return - in the Championship.
That’s according to Talk Sport, who claim that recently relegated West Ham United have been contacted by the player’s entourage with an eye to arranging a move. It’s unclear whether the east London side would be able to meet the wage demands of a player who was on big money at Man Utd, or whether they’d actually want to sign the Euro 2020 finalist.
The 3AM Verdict: Sancho needs to hurry up and find a new club - he’s only 26, but a football career goes by in a heartbeat. Dropping down a division with West Ham could be a case of short-term pain, long-term gain. He’d have less pressure in the second tier when it comes to reigniting his career, and could tear up the division once he gets back to full fitness.
Arsenal could move for Alvarez in January

Over in north London, Arsenal are now second in the Premier League only by goal difference after defeating Everton 2-0 last weekend. They’re still not finished on the transfer front, however, and Caught Offside suggest they could be set to reignite their interest in Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez come January.
The reports claim that Arsenal are “very interested” in striking a deal for the Argentina international, and continue to “monitor” the player’s situation closely. Atleti, who could demand as much as £126m for their star man, are unlikely to sell to fierce rivals Barcelona, which could open the door to the Gunners. However, given the rumoured asking price, it’s likely that any deal would be complex and involve various payment instalments and clauses.
The 3AM Verdict: Signing Alvarez would be huge for Arsenal - there’s no question that he’d be the final piece of their puzzle. However, the player does seem to have his heart set on a move to Barcelona. He’s already thrived in England with Man City, and coming back to do so again seems unlikely when he’s settled so well in Spain.
Man United and Aston Villa in wonderkid race

We’ll finish up at Old Trafford, where Man United’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth saw their dire season continue. Their defence has been appalling so far this season, and Team Talk suggest they’re looking to remedy this with a move for FC Twente teenager Ruud Nijstad. Apparently they’re not alone, with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Everton among the 18-year-old’s other admirers.
The club are believed to be preparing to “resist early offers”, with their technical director Erik ten Hag perhaps unlikely to do his former side any favours. A summer sale is said to be far more likely, with the player also thought to be keen to remain where he is for now and continue his development with plenty of first-team football.
The 3AM Verdict: We’re not sold on this one. If Nijstad was the real deal already, he’d have played at a higher age bracket for the Netherlands than the U19s. He may well become a top player in the future, but right now the last thing United need is more raw talent. They’d do well to target an experienced, Premier League proven option instead.
