Newcastle United and Southampton have until the end of the window to sign players

Newcastle United are looking to get into Europe again this season. It has been a strong campaign to date so far for Eddie Howe’s side.

They have the chance to bring in some reinforcements before the end of the January transfer window. The Toon Army also have the opportunity to let some players leave.

As for Southampton, they were promoted from the Championship last year after beating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley. They went up along with Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

It has been a tough transition into the top flight though and they have really struggled. The Saints sit rock bottom of the table.

Why Tyler Dibling would be ideal for Newcastle United

Newcastle United should try and lure Dibling up north either this month or in the summer. He has been one of very few positive for Southampton over recent times.

At the age of 18, the former Chelsea youngster has a very bright future ahead of him in the game. He would be an ideal long-term option for Howe. His former Saints boss Russell Martin said last year: "He is a beautiful footballer, a really outstanding talent. He's powerful. He possesses stuff that not every player possesses. I love working with him. I love watching him play. I'd pay a lot of money to watch him play football."

Meanwhile, his Southampton B team boss David Horseman had this to say: "Chelsea have an amazing academy; my son was actually in it. It's the most ruthless place because they have so many good players - maybe that just wasn't right for Tyler at the time. That experience might be the making of him long term because he probably realised how good he had it at Southampton and how much the club valued him."

Dibling has made 24 appearances in all competitions and has chipped in with four goals. Southampton will face a battle to keep him and Newcastle should push hard.

Newcastle United and Southampton swap deal?

The Toon Army have a couple of fringe players who they should throw into the mix in a player plus cash deal to try and get their man. Both Matt Targett and Joe Willock could do with a change of scene in the near future.

Targett knows about about Southampton after rising up through their academy. He was sold on to Aston Villa but he would be a shrewd addition for the Saints if he went back there. The left-back knows the club inside out, is vastly experienced in the Premier League and may feel he has a point to prove after being frozen out by Newcastle recently. He has played only two matches so far this term.

Willock needs to get his confidence back up and his numbers haven’t been great this season. The midfielder hasn’t scored in 20 league matches and if Dibling was to arrive at St. James’ Park, he could be made surplus to requirements. A move to Southampton, either on loan or permanently, would help him get some regular starting minutes and provide him with a platform to show what he can do. He is a product of the Arsenal academy.
