The latest injury updates and possible return dates of four Newcastle United stars.

Momentum appears to be building at Newcastle United after the Magpies made it three wins on the spin by coming from a goal down to claim all three points at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

A Carabao Cup win against Chelsea appears to have been the catalyst for an upturn in fortunes for the Magpies and confidence was further enhanced when Alexander Isak scored the only goal of last weekend’s home win against Arsenal. The Swedish striker was on target once again on Sunday after he netted the equaliser against Forest before Joelinton and Harvey Barnes both scored to help Eddie Howe’s men secure a win that lifted them to within a point of third placed Chelsea.

In some ways, the international break has come at the wrong time for Newcastle and they will hope any momentum gained by their trio of wins resumes when they return to action in a fortnight. But there is also hope there will be some positive news on the injury front as a number of Magpies stars edge closer to a return to contention. We take a look at the latest injury updates and possible return dates ahead of the international break.

Kieran Trippier

The former England full-back has not appeared since picking up a hamstring injury in last month’s goalless draw at Everton. There were some hopes Trippier could have been available for Sunday’s visit to Nottingham Forest but he will target a return to contention for Newcastle’s home game with West Ham United on the other side of the international break. Speaking last month, Howe said: “Kieran has picked up a hamstring problem. It's probably nothing too serious, but it will keep him out for a few weeks.” Predicted return date: Late November.

Callum Wilson

Much like Trippier, there was some hope the England striker could return for Sunday’s win at Nottingham Forest - but Wilson will hope to return for the home game with West Ham and be available for the first time this season. Howe had already hinted the striker would not return until after the international break in a press conference earlier this month. He said: “Callum is doing OK - he’s building his load again. There was no real injury but just a feeling in his body that he couldn’t push as hard as he wanted. We’ll see how he is, but probably with the two-week gap, it's best to leave it.” Predicted return date: Late November.

Sven Botman

The Dutch defender suffered a serious knee injury last season and has not appeared since the Magpies fell to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final. Botman is working hard to return to contention next month - although Howe moved to give a more realistic return date in his pre-match press conference ahead of the win at Nottingham Forest. He said: “We hope Sven can begin light training in the next few weeks. If we see him before the end of the year that would be a bonus. We are probably looking at more like January.” Predicted return date: Late December/Early January.

Jamaal Lascelles

Much like Botman, Lascelles suffered a serious knee injury that brought a premature end to his involvement during the second half of last season. The Magpies club captain will also target a return early in the new year - although he seemed to hint he was a little behind Botman in his recovery process. Speaking last month, he said: “I should be back on the grass soon and jogging in the next few weeks. It'll take me a while to build up from there, but I'm happy to be ticking those boxes, and now it's about getting my boots back on and progressing slowly that way.” Predicted return date: January 2025.
